The most likely problem is that (even as root) your PATH is not set to include the directory where these utilities are found. You don't say which distribution you are using, but common places to look for these are /sbin
, or /usr/local/sbin
. I recommend that you find if the utilities are actually installed on your system. If you have rpm, you can use it to find out; otherwise, try
find / -name ifconfig
Once you know where these programs are, you can set your shell PATH variable to include those directories in the search path.
