Command line pop3/gmail email sender

Hi there, a very quick question:

I want to be able to run a command at the end of a long emerge (installer in gentoo) to email my at my office to tell me its done so i can ssh into it and then shutdown if necessary. I was wondering what program would be best. I have read several posts which seem to recommend mailx but they seem to be for internal mailing or mailing from your own server(?) I am new to the mailing world and have got by by simply adding my gmail and pop3 into thunderbird. I was wondering if someone could steer me into the right directiong in sending mail from commandline through a pop3 account or gmail. i've also heard sendmail/mutt maybe able to do it but I want to hear what people's experience and opinions are first.

Thanking you in advance :)

Hope I've got the right end of your question here.

I'd use sendmail, it usually needs to be set up and configured but it's pretty standard and it's not as insane as some people make it out to be!

Then put a line like this at the end of your commands:
Code:

mail -s Install Finished your@email.address < /dev/null
This will very simply send you a blank email that has the subject line 'Install Finished'.

There's probably a better way to use the mail line - but I haven't been able to find one in the mail manual...

Hope this helps, or at least gets discussion going!
