Command Line appears after booting
Hi
When i install fedora 8, it sccessfully installed but after rebooting machine it goes to command prompt instead of any GUI. what should i do to show my GUI on machine. it ask for login and password and then nothing. plz help me i am hanged |
it should have set up X for you, but you can type startx and if there weren't any problems, it should start up. I haven't used fedora and used red hat long ago, but X is normally configured at install.

Which desktop environment did you choose during installation, Gnome(default), KDE or some other one? Seems odd no desktop environment start up.
Type this command at the prompt, startx. Post any errors it display if it doesn't work. |
Just edit /etc/inittab file
and edit this line: id:3:initdefault: to look like: id:5:initdefault: |
Just to expand on that, you'll need to be root to do that edit :)

hi khadija, i think im facing the same problem with yours. but slightly different from yours. Whenever i boot up, it will automatically run the terminal for you and all my desktop icon or folder disappear from sight ,the folder actualy still at the desktop because i still can see those folders at my desktop using command. Some of the solutions doesnt fully fixed mine because i aways have to do that everytime i restart but you can try this out, mayb it might helps by typing nautilus in your command. By right your GUI will appear after you type the command. i still looking for the answers..so i hope it will help you abit although it doesnt help much =) Those who know please help us. Thank You. |
