com port problem on easynote w mandriva

Hi everyone, I installed Mandriva on my laptop (a packard bell easynote). The laptop has no com port per se, I am using a usb-to-serial cable. Now, what I am trying to do is to connect my laptop to my sat receiver, in order to update my channel list. I know it works, beacuse I did it a million times with winxp, which came with the laptop (but that now rests in peace afetr formatting the hard rive and installing linux only...). I tried with a dmseg|less and the output shows that the cable is correctly active on usb0. I already created the symbolic links to the tty, but nothing. Everytime I try to use this program (which by the way runs under wine, and the symbolic link has been created in the wine dir as well), I always get the same error of "com port not found". Any idea on how I might get out of this? thanks
