Codec installation on Fedora 12
Hi Harry the Newbie here - first post!
I've just installed Fedora 12. I Love it. But ... can someone plz explain (in newbie speak) how to install a codec package so I can watch movies? (.avi, Xvid etc.....) for Movie Player (default installed). I've downloaded a package called "all-20071007.tar.bz2" that suggests it is just what I need. I created a folder called "codecs" in usr/local/lib/" as su using the terminal as pkg instructions suggested. When I tried to unpack the package into that new directory I got the reply that I did not have the right permissions. Has anyone else imstalled this/or better codec packages? How do I overcome this problem, plz? If anyone has a better/easier way of installing codecs PLEASE let me know. Thanks for reading this posting ....... HARRY ps if there's another/better video player, I'd like to know too, so I can try it out also. THANKS |
You need root privileges to write to /usr/local/lib. su to root and try unpacking again.

install vlc with repositories for proprietary formats (mp3, dvd, etc ...)
install rpmfusion free and rpmfusion non free from http://rpmfusion.org/
install livna rpm from http://rpm.livna.org/ from there it's easy: yum install libdvdcss vlc The good thing is when you update your system, vlc will be updated too enjoy |
