close, minimize/maximize buttons gone.

Hello All! My brother installed Linux for me and its been great! I love it, however he moved out of state today and now I'm kinda stuck figuring out everything that he would always "fix/tweek" for me.
Anyways, I can't figure out how to get the X for close and the minimize/maximize buttons back up into the upper right hand corner of the screen. It's probably something very simple but I'm very new to all this computer stuff. I don't know if it helps to mention that I have Ubuntu?

...and where are they now - or are they gone completely?
Do you remember doing some tweaking via System --> Preferences ?
Some themes just have fewer buttons and/or have them arranged differently.
