Clearing the yum update list

Hi, all,

I need to do a reinstall of the Fedora Core 8 OS. I've got good backups of /etc, /var, and /home that I can easily restore after the install. However, I suspect that after restoring those directories I'll have yum thinking I'm up to date, but some of the updated files will be missing (because I'm not restoring /usr, or /, you see.)

So, what I want to know is, how can I tell yum that it doesn't have ANY of the updates for the packages I've applied, so it will go ahead and bring everything up to date after I've restored the key parts of my system? I figure if I do that, I can restore the directories I have backed up, then run a huge "yum update" and I'll be back in business.

Thanks in advance.

Phil W.

My advice is not to restore "/var/cache/yum". Leave it as is, with the files from the re-installation.

A "yum update" will work fine, as it would after a normal installation.

Restoring "/var/cache/yum" will make the full update impossible (ok, nothing is impossible, let say then just very difficult), since the metadata was restored from the point of backup;
