Cinelerra - Performance, Picture Quality, and Stability

I'm currently a Mac user who is considering building a Linux box to use for digital video editing. I don't use Linux as my desktop operating system, but I do have experience using it on servers. I'm proficient with installing and maintaining software and using the command line, so I think that I would get along just fine if I installed a GUI for a project like this.

I've heard--and read in a few threads on this forum--that Cinelerra is one of the best applications available on Linux for video editing. However, I've never heard any real success stories from users who have used it before. How would it suit my needs? I would like to be able to be able to edit video in both DV and HDV formats, with no loss or little loss in picture quality. I will need to be able to apply special effects, and features like wire removal, white balance, and chroma key are important too. I'd also need to be able to edit audio, but I believe that software like Audacity would do the trick.

From what I can tell, there is nothing out there yet that rivals Final Cut Studio (Mac) that works on Linux. However, I am hoping to hear from someone who has actually used Cinelerra. Is it stable? How is the picture quality of processed video? Are there any tips and tricks that I should know about before starting on this project?
