Chrome browser Streaming Video 2nd monitor Tearing AMD proprietary driver
I have searched this out all over, and got nothing here, though i know it must be an issue for many people.
I have such bad screen tearing in my chrome streaming video I am forced to leave linux to watch the movies. I have no tearing in any of my 3 players, vlc, mpv SMplayer are fine. and, the picture quality in the chrome browser is great, but any movement in the movie, someone walking, will break the picture, sync is off, though audio/video seems fine words and lips wise. I have a 7950hd sapphire not overclocked with a fx8120cpu with 16gb ram ddr3 on a ga990fxa ud3board good ethernet wired connection with fast service. all that I had just upgraded my AMD driver from ver14 to 15 proprietary, done the appropriate installation , check the no tearing option, no hardware acceleration, though i have tried it in as many configurations as i could The thing is that everything seems to be configured properly, no issues present themselves-just the darn screen tears when trying to watch acorntv in chrome. I have another linux only box with an old amd gpu 4680 with built in xorg open source drivers that plays through the same router, same acorntv in chrome same version with almost no tearing at all. whatever does show up now and again is barely visible. not with the amd since 'upgrade' I found via my searches that AMD is not alone with screen tearing. what i can not find is how to make it go away. I use an extended desktop in both, open source and amd. 2 monitors same two when i try to duplicate- with 2 1080/1920 hd screens and, to confuse me more, i have my old box with the older 4670 gpu with two mismatched monitors. i use one 1024x1280 17" and the 42" 1080p -1080x1920 and no tearing to speak of, a twitch now and then is it i dont know what to do about it....other than switch to open source , which is a big deal with no idea if it will resolve anything...I am not able to find any one with experience doing that. I will do it , but for me, it is no small task. it took me 3 days to get the 14-15 drivers compiled installed and working, not straight, just took me time to get my patience quota in line with the reboots, miscues, mistakes and all that. am pretty new with linux and only did one amd proprietary driver 'upgrade' before and it was a year and a half ago when i was brand new to all things linux, mint, terminals, command lines. still inexperienced, but I love linux i like learning how to get things rolling via the terminal rather than just click /double click. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated--as other assistance has done in the past year. I got the little bit of understanding by help from smart people here.(and patient people) thanks john |
is chrome using hardware acceleration?
you can duckduckgo this, it's a very common fix. |

I am afraid that that kind of tearing will be there even if i do change to the drivers that come with the Mint17.3 dist. I use mate and cinnamon-meta-mate in another one . I have a bunch of computers i built, a couple were not ancient ,but older and i tried Mint in them and now, they are 'go to' machines and perform faster on many tasks than do my windows 7 x64 machines and way more stable and compatibility sound than the one windows 10 machine. but, the main serious drawback with my Linux/MInt machines is with a few video/graphics tasks which includes some games and what that entails. but, thanks for the suggestion anyway |
i think i remember situations where DISabling hardware accel in the browser helped. ...

personally, i have given up that sort of comparison (and, forgive my french, customer mentality) long ago. |
however, not being able to stream video from netflix, acorntv and other commercial entertainment sources is a deal=breaking failure. disabling hardware acceleration is fine for eliminating skipping, stuttering and vid/audio drops and is the first thing one needs to check. However, the screen tearing I refer to is literally a tear across the top or middle of the picture that happens and looks as if the 2 or 3 ,whatever, parts are out of sync. and a tear like misalignment occurs. It seems to be worse with the AMD proprietary driver machine is my anecdotal observation, but may have nothing to do with that at all. I dont know, I am only trying to make it go away or adjust something to reduce or eliminate it.
being so new to linux, i look to the terminal entries as a magical fix all option because I dont really know how it makes things work.I kept hoping there might have been some tweak or other comments that one could get the tearing to stop. it seems like a small issue but it means using a different machine to watch that kind of streaming video content, while all my dvd, bd, iso an other video files play perfectly in any of the freeware vid players available. I have looked to the flash or pepper-flash as the sources but does me no good, since i am still dead in the water with regard to any fix but, thanks for your help nonetheless john |
erm.
ok. please don't write so much, it confuses me. what sort of "terminal magic" did you try? show us. also, if you really want to solve this, we should start from zero, but properly this time. please open a terminal and enter Code:
uname -rv |

and, thanks for the duckduckgo. i forgot about it even though i had in among the 4 or 5 in the ff search pull down I appreciate your willingness to assist , as well I am going to check out the duckduck youtube vids even though they seem to be nVidia before I engage you in your gracious offer John |
f "terminal magic" did you try? show us.
also, if you really want to solve this, we should start from zero, but properly this time. I did not write terminal magic, it means something different once words are put in different order and taken out of context.: I simply meant that coming from total GUI environment and command line/terminal use being limited in windows to sfc /scannow or one other one. I wrote magical fix from the copy/paste things I had employed. that is all. I am looking to the compiz settings with respect to the streaming video tearing. I get no desktop tearing at all, can make the windows shake and fly around in one solid piece. only those video, possibly HD video in streaming though. HD iso, or vid files playback just fine |

you should also understand that the commands i asked you to enter (and post their output) will not fix anything. we are strictly in the information gathering phase now. |

*However, as my luck goes, when I booted into that mint 17 machine it was a mess of error messages. out of the (seemingly_) blue. stings of dbus errors, drdy errors, and after hours of getting the grub set up and doing the mdm to defaults, I was just able to log into a read only system. no clue, clearly based on my inexperience, i spent lots of time reading through what i figured might have been the source, then trying to decide what to pick from among the results to try out. I got into a 'normal' system finally and tried to configure the Mdm or gdm. however , there were other issues , update manager was messed up, as was package manager. I , now, only get the log in screen after the grub boot page, and spinning wheel. I will need to get back at it, I am not convinced i have destroyed it while trying to make it work again. but, if i cant get anything going fairly quickly, i will be overwriting it with a clean install. i did file checks and did a hard drive error check which showed no errors. but i think something is 'not aligned. i did the dmesg and i did searches on the error messages i saw , it was my first linux attempt and has a ton of 'fixed'errors , maybe it is just time i forget about screen tearing with amd streaming and put a clean install in . i did much or most of this above with a live usb to get the thing to boot, so, i have to put this Screen Tearing on hold, or will mark thread as such very soon. |

I had backups so just went ahead to Mint 18Sarah. It was a very easy upgrade. I have hardware new enough so the upgrade was ok for me, will not use it in other linux computers i have with less resources. I am using the open source drivers in this computer, the one with the terrible screen tearing in the streaming video large screen tv. I get no noticeable tearing anymore -with the Mint 18-x64 MATE built in drivers. a tad now and again but nearly indistinguishable and only across the top 10% and not a full complete tear a s the AMD 15.2 drivers had which was a big tear across the middle with the top and bottom of the tear being way far out of sync. I am sorry i did not get to test with Marco, or with compiz off. I am not in any hurry to put AMD proprietary drivers into this Mint18 x64 Sarah. I watched a video on youtube with the built in drivers about mint 18 and there was mention that AMD drivers were not supported, or not at the time of the video, at any rate Thank you for your help. I do not think this is solved. but i suppose i am supposed to mark it as such since i am no longer able to provide information since i no longer have mint 17,3 in it nor do i have AMD drivers-but I no longer experience dramatic screen tearing sorry to write so much, just wanted to be clear thanks again John |
