choppy xine dvd playback
 

I finally got xine to play my commercial DVD's, but they're playing back really choppy. Actually, I had watched them seamlessly before, but it's choppier now. I also just set it up so I could watch them on TV... could that be what's slowing everything down?

Oh yes, and I've tried to change the DMA settings (though I think it was already on)...

P.S. I only have a pII 350 if that makes any difference :)

That makes all the difference mate ;)
350 is pretty much the lowest end,
and in complex scenes even my athlon 600
starts coughing sometimes ;)

You may try adjusting the programs priority with nice, also mentioned in the above link.

why no xine in redhat ?
i got it in mandrake.

http://mplayerhq.hu is MUCH MUCH better for lower end systems as it's much more optimized than smelly old Xine.

Check if xv is enabled.Little wrench on the gui-video.

Redhat doesn't focus so much on multimedia stuff yet. I think GStreamer is included in 8.1 however, which can play certain types of movies (but not DVDs currently).

xine gives me problems too from time to time, all I do is uninstall and install back again, after that the problems are always gone !

xv makes ALL the difference...

I have a question (if anyone can answer me)...I have the neomagic xv driver downloaded from the the mplayer site and I *FINALLY* managed to get it to work.

The image quality is awesome and playback is smooth on my 333...BUT....the screen seems to wrap around ...there's an inch-wide strip on the right side of the screen that actually belongs on the left side.

Has anyone seen this before and can it be fixed? (I see it in mplayer and xine...)

I found that patch on the mplayer website if I remember correctly.

dude, i scanned that site till my eyes bled and i couldn't find any instructions!

(Minor rant: No offense to them but for such a popular application their site is pretty poorly laid out and presented)

I also googled like a mad man and i got some indication of a straight swap of one file for another.

as i recall (i don't have the patch in front of me) it has a .c extension so can i just do a swap for a .o extension?

And can i simply swap it in Konqueror or is it a complicated process?

did mplayer keep working well and did you solve your wrapping problem?

Sorry to ask so many questions but this really is driving me mad and you are about the only person in the world i can talk to who's done it!

Why do you hate Xine so much? I know you always recommend mplayer, but I've got both and I can really see little difference between them - they both play all of my file formats, they're both pretty fast and have similar features. DVDs play really badly on MPlayer too (actually I'm just trying a wind up now - they play really badly on Xine as well, but that's some sort of graphics card issue I think, or possibly libdvdcss)
So anyway, why is MPlayer that much better? Just curious really, I like them both, although I use Xine because I always have.

Well as you can see, my last post on this was in March and the patch didn't work very well for my chip. However, upgrading to the latest Xfree86 DID help me.

I'll see if I can find what little notes I took from then. I'm pretty sure what I had was an .o file linked to from the documentation at the mplayer site...it was already compiled. I don't know how you found a source file (.c), I know I hadn't found it.

Incidentally, you can't swap them....a .c file is source code while a .o is a compiled object.

Wish I could help you more on this...but I have problems remembering what I had for breakfast, much less what I did last March :)
