any knid of a reponce will be very much appreciated.

P.S. Im a linux newbie so when u respond u have to talk very very........ very slowly. thanks:confused:

I noticed that KDE in mine has choppy sound when playing anything, but other GUIs (GNOME, WindowMaker) work just fine. Try switching GUIs. Hope this is relevant at all.

Try using "mpg123 foo.mp3" and see what happens. If you're in GNOME you may need to run

killall esd

and if in KDE

killall artsd

first, otherwise you could get device is busy errors.

It may be that your card is not very well supported, or doesn't support hardware resampling.

i think if the sound is choppy and locks up your machine,
the dma channels for the card are set wrong.
i think redhat still has
sndconfig

Go to xmms.org and follow the instructions for adding MP3 support to your system.

foo.mp3 was an example, it was meant to be replaced with an MP3 you own. "play" will do the same for wav files, for instance:

play example.wav

its not mp3 files its every thing that is played, and yes it will sometimes lock up my machine.
