Choosing a distro for my DAW needs
 

I'm looking for suggestions on a distro that would fit my needs.

I have so far very limited Linux knowledge.

Basically I want to use a Linux system as a desktop and as a DAW with multi-track recording and sample libraries and MIDI. I also want to be able to easily set up windows VST plugins, which is supposed to be possible through dssi-vst.

I also have a large music library in various formats so a good flexible file manager would be great.
As my music player I intend to use Foobar2000 with WINE.

I want my system to be as easy as possible, with little need for configuration and things running well out of the box.

Antoher thing I'm concerned about is if I should should stick to a distro that uses a certain package format. It seems like there is more and better updated software for Debian based distros.

Please share you opinions and experiences :D

if you have a neat broadband internet connection,
ubuntu will satisfy your needs.

I dont know about the foobar2000, but you can get all the kind
of musical software in ubuntu.

I'm concerned that those media based distros might be too difficult overall and lack the large user base of larger distros. I've been leaning towards Ubuntu, especially since there's the Ubuntu Studio project now. openSUSE looks quite tempting two, seeming to be on the forefront of Linux desktop innovation.
Could anyone point me in the right driection?:)

EDIT: And I'm still not sure how much a should worry about a distros package format.

If you want to simply set up a music/media PC, I'll recommend Ubuntu. The package format only affects you when you're installing software, but that could be relatively often, including updates. There's one reason I suggest Ubuntu, apt-get just can't be beat.

I would suggest you think about if you really want foobar, it might be more trouble than its worth to get it working, and there are so many really good linux music players. Take a look at rythmbox - my favorite - amongst others.

I'm running a DAW with gentoo & ardour it has an M-Audio delta1010 8 analog plus 2 digital & midi (in and out) you should look at some of the more recording centered distros if you want it to be easy to set up. check out:

running a media player in wine seems like a waste especially when there are more great media players to choose from on linux then on windows.
