Checksum on MD5

I am a new student in the Linux class. I have been struggling with the questions in The Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux book. The question being in Chapter 19 question 9. After downloading a file, you find that it does not match the MD5 checksum provided. Downloading the file again gives the same incorrect checksum. What have you done wrong and how would you fix it? I have read this chapter and am finding nothing referencing checksum. The only thing I have found in the book referencing checksum is in the glossary. Can someone help me with this?

This is at the end of a chapter about FTP, right? My guess is: you downloaded the file in ASCII mode when you should have downloaded it in binary mode. You would fix it by redownloading the file in binary mode.
