Checking internet speed?

hi

is there any way i can check internet download speed from terminal? so that i'll be able to put that value in variable.

most of the examples that i searched from internet are based on wget and curl, they simply download some sample file and we can only see the download speed at terminal. that does not help me if i want to write some script based on internet download speed.

here is one example. but its too big. in fact, so big that i'm even scared to run it.

are there no better short way?

thanks.

There is a way, but you have to have access to another machine somewhere outside your network. It's called nuttcp.

It's a pretty cool program when you get it working.

For point to point speed tests I use iperf (http://iperf.sourceforge.net/).

Regarding testing internet speed, http://www.speedtest.net via https://github.com/sivel/speedtest-cli is the simplest I can think of....
