check for master or slave ?
 

Hello,

My laptops hard disk crashed and I am trying to figure out as much information as possible since I want to replace it myself. Toshiba asks around 50000 - 60000 yen for a simple replacement. A bit steep in my opinion.
since I am going to try some changes and will have to reinstall my OS I was thinking about upgrading my CDrom drive as well.

I researched and apparently toshiba puts their CD rom drives on master or slave in the factory. There are hacks available if you bought a master drive and needed a slave and vice versa but I would prefer to buy the right type and not mess with soldering contacts.

I am using knoppix (live linux on CD) at the moment.
How can I see if the CDrom drive I have now installed is a master or slave ?

the knoppix I am using in version 3.3 and is build on a Debian with KDE
I looked at the System > Info Center > devices but do not really understand what it means.
block devices lister are
1 ramdisk (to run knoppix)
3 ide0
11 sr
22 ide1
114 ataraid
240 cloop

All help is very much appreciated.
PS it has been a very long time since I worked with Linux (about 4 years) but I think I will try to make linux my main OS when I have my new hard disk.

holly hell dude they want over 500 usd for a hard drive??? i bought an entire laptop for that much!!!!

You can check when booting if you have some way to see the posting messages most BIOS allow you to disable the splash screen or have key you can hit when booting to do the same this should show you the master/slave configuration plus the IDE bus it is on also if Knoppix has the lshw package installed you may be able to get the IDE connector it is on from its output.

Edit: Also looking into the configuration of the BIOS usually tells you where the drives are located on the IDE bus in one of the screens with usually an autodetect function when configuring the drives on the buses.
