I ran into a problem last year where I couldnt get 3d acceleration to work with my ATI card. I am now trying to update the drivers first, then will try to trouble shoot father into it.

I know nothing about the ATI setup, im a nvidia man myself, but have you tried running it from a real tty logging in as root, no just su? Cause thats what it sounds to me like, and thats what nvidia needs to get the correct variables..
