character art boot splash for Fedora 9

i was wondering how to create character art (e.g. big letters Foampile with each letter consisting of smaller of its kind etc.) and how to set it as the boot splash screen on my Fedora 9 box (command line).

thanks.

You can google character art and find several sites that host it or sites that will convert images to ASCII.

Not sure about the boot splash, are you running a boot splash program right now? The most common boot splashes are usplash or splashy... Both of these use images, not ASCII.

You can also download the program jpg2a which can convert .jpeg files into ASCII art. If you're using Ubuntu or Debian you can use sudo apt-get install jp2a and download this magnificent program, otherwise you can just try the homepage.

This is a really fun and cool program.

Be sure to read the documentation for the Fedora boot process. I've read the one of the Fedoras doesn't use init anymore. There may be a splash program that is run as a service instead. The init program you have may not be the actual init program, and if you have an /etc/inittab file, it may be a stub.
