Changing Window Manager

I am using Enlightenment and I really like a lot of things about it, but I would like to use Gnome because I think learning Linux basics at the same time I am trying to learn to navigate Enlightenment is driving me crazy! I have Mandrake 9.1, how do I use Gnome again? Thanks in advance.

from command line or Xterm window type xwmconfig, this will pop up a menu with available options.

How do you log in now is the deciding question. If you use a graphical login then there should be a simple drop down menu to select a window manager from.

I do not seem to have that application

I set it to Enlightenment when I installed, but I have to startx manually.

320mb's suggestion was for those people who use startx instead of a graphical login I believe. As Mandrake defaults to a graphical login, I'd wonder if you actually have installed any other window managers to pick, as when you install them they usually add entries to the login box.

You use startx? Ok then look in your home directory for hidden files beginning with x, eg .xinitrc or .xsession

What do I do once I find those files?

If you have them, they they're overridding the system's default choice of WM. I dont use startx so dunno quite which one you're looking for. There's a lot of info about the X startup process, and I do know you want to comment but one of the lines which read exec windowmanager

I don't have those files. Is there a way to switch to a graphical login?

Proud 08-03-2003 03:42 PM

Depending on how you switched away from it in the first place, try the Mandrake Control Centre -> Boot -> DrakBoot. Check the 'Use the graphical environment when your system starts' checkbox. :)
Or edit /etc/inittab, change the line from id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:

Or if you want to stick to startx. Create a file with the name ".xinitrc" (dont forget the dot in front). Add this line to it:

exec gnome-session

of course you muct have gnome installed.
