i need some help regarding changing user's permissions to certain commands. to be more specific: i, being a root, want to give a permission to another local user so that he/she can create his/her directory in his/her home directory.

hmmm...you mean you want the user Jane to be able to create a direcotry in /home/Jane? By default, Jane should have ownership of the Jane directory. Its hers.

well, yes, if jane is a normal user then she should have right to creat her own directories in her own home directory (which is /home/jane), of course she cannot/does not have right to mkdir/rmdir in anyother user, say james, who is other normal user.

but whn i, logged on as normal user, try to create a directory (mkdir ...) in my home dir (/home/user_name) it does not work! so i thought that i need to change the previledges of jane (as root) so that she can mkdir/rmdir in her own /home/jane.

let me give one more example:

1. two normal users: jane and james
2. one root.

3. by default jane has her own dir : /home/jane
and so does james: /home/james

the problem:

so jane has logged on to the system, she wants to creat another dir., say cpp_prgs (ie /home/jane/cpp_prgs), but my problems is that i (as normal user) am not able to do that, so every time i need need to create dir., i switch to root and then do it (which i do not like), so i thought that if there was some way if i could give rights related to dirs. to jane then she can easily manipulate her /home/jane (of course she would not be able to do the same in james (or any other user) dir.)!

am i making some sense now? and i would like to knw "is it even possible?", i checked some books but i could not find anything related to it.

well it's easily possible by either adding your "normal user" (???) to the root group, or janes group in /etc/group, or change the permissions on janes direcotry to allow anyone at all to access it.

This is a bad idea though, and kinda defeats the point of seperate users, and makes a joke out of the security features too, so should be avoided.

ok. so let me put it down in my words, wht i understood.

1. the only way for a normal user capable of using mkdir/rmdir commands is to give the all root prviledges (including in root group)

2. whn u say "change the permission", u mean by "chmod"??? can u help me with one example? please
