Changing ownership messed up the system


Hi,

on my system, uname -a replied this

Linux systemname 2.6.9-22.ELsmp #1 SMP Mon Sep 19 18:32:14 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 ..

what i have done is changed ownership of a user on root directory I am sorry

chown -R oracleinstall /oracle
chmod -R 775 /oracle

and now i am not able to do su, neither i am able to connect through ssh client. I am really fret if i have blown up the system. Please can somebody help

first check whether /bin/su has a suid set i.e

-rwsr-xr-x /bin/su

secondly check whether u r able to ping to the system

Thanks Maxy, for such a quick reply, unfortunately i had to reinstall the server otherwise management was gonna kill me, i shall create the same scenario on my personal machine and then shall try your solution.
