changing menus / installing programs
 

hi
i just recently installed mandrake linux 8.2
it took me a while to figure out how to install some programs i downloaded (new Gaim, gnutella client)
and i eventually found it put executable bin files in /usr/local/bin

the problem is the menu still links to the old gaim which seems to still be on my computer and gtk-gnutella isnt on the menu so i have to use nautilus to get to the folder each time i want to run it

so my question is:
where are most of the program files kept (for old gaim as an example) and how do i change the menus so i can arrange things how i want and add new programs?

i am using gnome as root and blackbox on my user acocunt and i want to change menus on both (assuming the menus differ between window managers which it seems so)

many source packages install by default to /usr/local/bin/ while lots of rpm's i use install into /usr/bin/ which is all up to the person that made the rpm. so i'd assume that you installed this new version of gaim from source, not a precompiled rpm or similar.

changing the menus will of course depend on which winodw manager you're using. for blackbox i'd recommendnig installing the bbconf app, which will edit your menus for you. and tehre's a gnome menu editor in gnoem somewhere on the menus too. in which case there's a menu editor around, but i'd assuem that right clicking on the entry would give you some editing options too.

if u wanna install from source wherever u want, then use open the "Makefile" file and edit the variable called prefix make it as:
PREFIX='ur own directory path'
