changing kernel

my kernel is old 2.4.20-8

and i understand that old ernel is usually buggy and has lot's of backdoor

i wanna change it into the newest kernel

which will be better? to stick to 2.4 kernel or change to 2.6

are there any notes that i have to read that can help me out before changing kernel?

thank you
