Changing icons for shortcuts and adding applications to KDE panel
 

I am using SuSE 9.0. I added a shortcut to my desktop (using KDE) for evolution. How can I change the icon associated with this? Also, how do I add an application to the KDE panel? The help manual says to right click on the panel and then choose Add. The only problem is that I can only do this when I am logged in as root. I want to do it for my regular user. When I right click on the panel logged in as my regular use the only options I have are KDE Panel Handbook, Report Bug, About KDE Panel and About KDE.

right click on the shortcut, and choose properties, under the "general" tab there should be a "button" showing the current icon, click on it, and you should get the icon editor.

I have found that but when I change a shortcuts Icon picture ALL the manual shortcuts I have created have same picture....

Can anyone help?

nm, I was make the links wrong. Once remade my links be "Link to Application" each could have their own Icon. Before I was creating short-cuts to Script files.

Understand I am very new to Linux and I have only booted into it a few times. I tried no to mess around to much or I'll have to have a Linux Gruru friend fix up my f*ck ups. LOL

I am using KDE, so these steps I assume only work for KDE [I really have no clue].

1. Right Mouse Click on your desktop.
2. Select "Create New" [should be the top choice]
3. Then Select "File" [2nd Option of three choices]
4. Then Select "Link to Application" [2nd Option of 4]

Now at this point you should have a new Box, "Properties for Program destop - KDesktop"
It should have three Tabs, General, Permissions, Application

General - I believe this would be the "Friendly" name you want to give the Shortcut
Permissions - I am thinking do not mess with this tab (I do not ATM since I have no clue about Linux Permissions yet)
Application -
Description and Comment - Can be what ever ?? [I think]
Command - the path to the Script that you want to run. Either type in the path or use the Browse [I use Browse]

Now assuming I am correct about the above and listed it correctly for you, you should have a new Link on your desktop for the script you want to run with KDE's defualt Icon.

Changing the Icon Steps:
1. Right mouse on the new link you just created
2. Chose Properties [Should be bottom choice]
3. Click the Default Icon [Upper Left,]
4. By default it shows you "System Icons" but I selected "Other Icons" [it should look in your script directory that you entered into the command line in the above steps]
5. Select a file that has a xpm, png, svg, svgz.
6. Click okay a bunch of times and you should have a New Application link with the Icon you want it to have on your desktop.
