Changing hostname in Linux and gcc installation

Hi,

I want to change my hostname. But it is just changing temporarily.
I am doing like this

#hostname ABCD

Is it proper? or just tell me how i can do it?

-----------------

I want to install gcc in my linux system, what is the simplest way to do it? I downloaded a rpm and it tells that it needs some dependencies. Help me in this regard also...

It is urgent as I got work to do...

Thanks

what distro are u using? i suspect red hat types, the hostname could be set in the file /etc/sysconfig/network. vi open the file and set your hostname there for keeps.
