That's because you are used to suze. Ubuntu is a good distro, but it doesn't work exactly like Suze. Better stick to something you know.

If you haven't found it yet, searches should reveal sudo passwd root. After setting the root pwd that way you will have a normal root login and you can cleanup sudo (see i.e. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=root+password)
