Changing default boot OS back to Ubuntu without being able to boot Ubuntu
 

Ive been using Ubuntu for a while, mainly because my internet doesn't work in windows except in safe mode. Today I had an idea that might fix it, but didn't and ended up changing the boot order, and using BIOS won't let me boot Ubuntu, because its located on the second partition of my first drive, and BIOS won't let me choose which partition. Also, the boot partition for Ubuntu is located on the third partition of my second drive. I've tried using some software to boot it, but Ubuntu refuses to load through that. It was OSL2000 I think. Anybody know how I can get Ubuntu to load without reinstalling it? Thanks in advanced.

Most importantly what did you change and how?
Does an Ubuntu boot screen come up? or windows starts booting on its own?


an Option is the chuck the Ubuntu installer/LiveCD in

Manually mount your HDD
3rd Partition second drive (your /boot drive?)
edit a file on there called
grub/menu.lst (or similar)
it contains list of OS
timeout will be time to boot default OS
default Os section etc

Windows automatically starts, that was what i meant by, "without being able to boot Ubuntu". I'll try with the live CD though. What I think got changed was the BIOS boot record, because I Windows made itself default on that when I used system restore in an attempt to fix my internet while running Windows. In case you are wondering why I wanted it fixed, it's because I can't do everything under with Linux, even with wine.

the reason i asked was because you werent clear enough that you couldn't boot ubuntu
i was under the impression that it crashed during boot.

However the sounds of it System Restore has the same effect as reinstalling windows.
You cannot install windows after installing Linux as it wipes the boot sector .
The problem you have is you need to reinstall Grub Boot Menu.

Unfortunately i don't know how to that manually.

I usually Reinstall when this comes along
or in the case of Suse + Mandriva running Upgrade from the install CD fixes it.

Most Linux distribution can reinstall the boot loader in the MBR, usually by putting the first CD or the DVD in the drive and re-booting.

Thanks a lot, I probably wouldn't have found that Ubuntu thread Junior Hacker. I had to deviate a bit from the instructions bit it ended up working, so I'm happy. carl0ski, I'm sorry I wasn't really clear, but I was pretty annoyed at Windows when I asked.
