hi :)

I have instaled Red Hat 9.0 on an old PC on hda so that - in case it doesn't work - i do not damage my other files on my main PC. So now, it work and I want to install the HDD of my old PC as hdb in my new one (this one). Now the question: does Red Hat automaticaly detect itself on hdb or will I get errors without reconfigruate it (reinstall it?). Would be nice if anyone could tell me :)

Personally - I would just re-install it ......................

ie disconnect the drive from the old computer and connect it up as a Primary Slave /dev/hdb on your New computer - then just reinstall it onto /dev/hdb - choose the option to delete all existing partitions on the drive and let Red Hat have an easy automatic install onto it -

Also - install either LILO or GRUB to the MBR and make a boot disk near the end of the new RH9 install just in case of problems.

Red Hat will not automatically reconfigure itself, and also since the hardware is different, you will get a host of error messages if you try to connect it as hda. So just do as SkyLine says.

there is a way to do this. if you are interested in learning let me know. and redhat 9's kudzu will probably find and install the new harware no problem, depending on exactly how old the old pc is. and you could edit the /etc/fstab file. i understand you don't have much on the drive probably, so install is fine, but if interested can help you. dd command is pretty cool. i like to learn new stuff. but anyhow good luck.

for example, could edit /etc/fstab to point to right stuff for redhat. depending on what you have on other computer, may not work so easy as implied. not saying wrong, but would be careful. make sure you have boot floppy for other system as well, whatever it is. anyway, i will quit blabbing. i have had some fun with same types of situations, and also some real problems. if you are just user may not care, but if would like to be more advanced, any of you, please feel free to ask. my email is tyler0123@yahoo.com.
