Change to boot only text mode no gdm in debian?
I have looked and tried to figure out how I could stop X and the gdm from loading at bootup. I checked inittab and its set to id:2:initdefault: I even changed it to 3 thinking maybe that would work. the GDM still always loads at startup. This is a debian machine I am trying to set up and I dont mess around with debian or gnome that much.
If gdm is started as a daemon, changing inittab won't do a thing. You need to stop the daemon from starting.
I'm not sure how debian manages it's startup daemons, so I can't help you there. But you have a starting point now.
This should help you out: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Update-rc.d
Basically you use the command update-rc.d to manage startup services. So something like this:
