Do you normally use your user password to use the update app or did you set a separate password for the root user during install?
If you use you normal user password can you post the output of
Code:
cat /etc/sudoers

until I get unknown error I put in my password to start my use and for each time I update or install anything. i need a driver for a vid site and click on their install. i get the window for my password. everything works fine until i get unknown error when i enter my password. i do know my password so its not like i'm typing in the wrong password either.my disc is for 2009 and when it updates it updates to 2010. thats when i start getting unknown error.

Your situation is not very clear. Could you please answer the below questions:

1. Are you using the 2009 live cd to boot or you have actually installed the distribution to the hard disk?
2. When you login, are you using a password-less login or you are required to input a password to login?
3. When you say you load updates, what exactly are you doing?

1.I have it installed madriva 2009
2.until i get unknown error i enter my password to login. once i get inknown error everything from there on is guest only. I can't install anything because everytime I enter my password I get unknown error
3. When i get online I get a box that pops up saying i have updates. I click to install the updates and 2009 is no more from there its 2010. After a few times of entering my password i get unknown error again. i have just been letting it run on guest for a while. but that makes some of vid sites unable to view as I need their driver to view them. Crackle works for movies but they have just a few. Hulu and all the others wont work as I need their driver and can't install them because it asks for my password and i get unknown error.

It is difficult to say. You are able to enter the password to login but the same password give error when you try to run updates. Are you able to sudo? You can check by running:

Code:
sudo pwd
When it prompts, you have to enter your password.

When you first installed Mandriva, did you create 2 passwords? One for Root (Administrator) and one for normal user or did you create one password for both root and normal user?

When I installed mandriva I got 1 window for a password that lets me login and be admin. This same window opens whenever I need to download anything. I cannot login, cannot access admin, I am stuck as a guest only.
I can load the disc again and go through install, but as I have done that 2 or 3 times and I keep returning to this very same problem I have just let it run as a guest.
It really sucks that I can't download the drivers and watch most of the vids on line. Some sites require their driver to access any info on their site and I cannot get on them either.
I enter my password and I get the window to enter my password again in a few seconds. I enter my password 2 or 3 times and I get an icon that says unknown error. I don't ever get invalid or incorrect password or anything that says I entered the wrong password. All I ever get is unknown error.
