I managed to load wary puppy 5.5 onto a dell 9550 laptop. It has a 20gig toshiba hardrive,a pentium 3 1133 mhz processor a cd and floppy drive. It also has ubuntu 12.04 LTS loaded on the hard drive.I would like to change the boot order in the grub 4 boot menu. The title of the grub window is Grub 4 DOS 0.4.4 2009-06-20 mem 637k/510m menuend: ox 48D3B. My desire is to put Wary puppy at the top of the menu. I am brand new to Linux and would like to learn how to access and use the manual in ubuntu and wary puppy. wary puppy is saved onto the hard drive with ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I don't think I have enough ram to efficiently use ubuntu on this machine so I want to reorder the boot menu. I did read one of the similar threads but am not sure how to put the information to good use.

I've never used Grub4DOS but if you have a menu.lst file in the grub directory, you can set which system boots by changing the 'default' line at the top. It probably is zero (0), so you would count down to the Puppy entry and change to that. The count starts at zero not one if it based on Grub Legacy.

Thank you Yancek for your prompt response. What are the commands necessary to do this? I am brand new to this and am trying to learn where to navigate to to find these commands.

Does that mean you have a menu.lst file?
I've never used Grub4DOS but, if it has the same files as the actual Grub, there will be a menu.lst or grub.conf file in the /boot/grub directory and you just open the file with a text editor logged in as root user and find the line at the top which says: default 0 and change the zero to the correct number as explained above.

I'm curious as to why you have Grub4DOS as Puppy still uses (I think) Grub Legacy and Ubuntu uses Grub2.

Do I go to edit in the grub menu or go to a command line? I know what you want me to look for but I don't know where to go to do it?

Which system has the bootloader in the master boot record? I'm not sure how Grub4DOS fits into this whole equation. Puppy still AFAIK still uses Grub Legacy and Ubuntu uses Grub2. Do you have a separate boot partition where you have Grub4DOS or did you install it on one of the partitions?

Maybe we can get a little clarification if you go to the site below, read the instructions, download and run the bootinfoscript from either Ubuntu or Puppy and post the output here, a results.txt page.
