change color of terminals in Ubuntu 10.4

Is there a way to change color - like to backgournd white - letters black or background black with letters green.

I have tried using this command and it works for a while, but the terminals seem to fade back to the original color.

setterm -term linux -back blue -fore white -clear

What terminal application are you using? And you marked your thread as
solved - is it?
