could some one give hints tips ideas on how can we install centos 128 mb ram machine with minimal GUI, lowest graphics mode. what are main package i do need to remove it.
Do you want any graphics, or just a basic text based system?
If it's the latter, set your default run-level to 3 and use "yum groupremove" to get rid of "GNOME Desktop Environment", "Graphical Internet", "Graphics", "KDE (K Desktop Environment)", "Office/Productivity", "Sound and Video", and "X Window System" - for starters
dear sir i am looking very low graphics to run say internet or any vnc view with gui. just for sake of gui nothing else. during installation what package select or remove just to get idea. as i have 128mb ram pc it take hours and installation did not start yet. so i stop and start on LQ to clarify. kind regards
Not having done that, I can't really say. You will probably get a very good answer from the CentOS mailing list if you posted your question there. You would need X11, but I don't know if any desktop packages are available other than KDE or Gnome. I know there are smaller ones around, but I'm not sure if they're available for CentOS.
centos 5.4 is similar to redhat that is why using. puppy is good for desktop level only it cant be a server. any alternate distro should i try, even xfc doesnot work loading issues and gui issues raised with xbuntu.
so bottom line is low graphics with server level distro etc i am looking advise guideline
Yes, CentOS is like RHEL. So what? If you think your machine can be a server with only 128Mb of RAM, then I feel you are expecting too much from such low-spec equipment and an Enterprise grade operating system. What you are asking is like trying to make a 747 land on an aircraft carrier - a crash is inevitable
