CentOS Linux 5.3 Linux installation/partition problem

Hi,

I had WinXp and CentOS Linux installed on my pc, but I uninstalled CentOS. Now I want to again install CentOS 5.3.

I have 250 GB harddisk. Following are partitions.

Fat16 Primary 40 MB.(Comes with Dell pc)
NTFS Primary 90 GB
NTFS Logical 90 GB
Unallocated Logical 57 GB

Now I want to install CentOS Linux in 57 GB(dual boot).
During installation when it ask me about creating partition layout, I chose custom layout and added 100 MB /boot partition and tried to create next partition, it says No free space available, can not create partition..
I restarted again. I again chose custom partition layout and chose swap. Next I tried to create another partition, I got same error.

What appears to me is it allows me to create first partition and for next partition, it gives me error.

How do I resolve it?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

In partitioning you can have 4 standard partitions or 3 standard partitions and multiple extended partitions. You have to designate the 4th partition for use for extended partitions then add the extended partitions starting with partition 5. That 4th one will show all remaining space and the ones from 5 on are actually subsets of it.

But I have only two primary partitions.

no you do not , you have 4

1)Fat16 Primary 40 MB.(Comes with Dell pc)
2)NTFS Primary 90 GB
3)NTFS Logical 90 GB
4)Unallocated Logical 57 GB

and that forth needs to be extended
so that the cent installer can make /boot , / , /swap,/home partitions ( 4 more partitions)

also i would RECOMMEND installing the current CentOS 5.5 and not the old 5.3
there have been MANY improvements in the last two releases

also with that 40 meg fat 16 partition the grub.conf/menu.lis will need fixing by hand for the windows entry

when you are using the installer /boot is being added to "3" and it sees 4 primary’s

save your data on a second computer or dvd and reformat the disk ,

use "gparted live cd" to make 2 partitions 1 90 gig for xp
and the second "ext3" 57 gig for CentOS
reinstall windows ( without that 40 meg fat16 partition )
reinstall xp ( and INSTALL the very "last service" pack for xp SP3 )
on one ( 1 ) the first primary
there is a hidden check box on the xp install cd to STOP xp from "borg'ing" the WHOLE disk -- find it and UNCHECK IT
then install the current CentOS 5.5

Thanks John & MensaWater.
