Cedega performance question

I'm planning on buying HL2 but really don't want to boot up windows everytime i want to play it. I was thinking about purchasing Cedega but my question is if it lacks significant performance than playing games in windows.

Thanks.

Well every software, development or not, has its ups and downfalls. I used to have Cedega and hardly ever had any problems with it. Maybe a few bugs here and there. You can get the CVS version of it instead of buying the retail. Anyways, Cedega has come a long way and has support for hundreds of brand name games. There really won't be much of a difference in performance when playing in Cedega. That is just my opinion as a hardcore gamer.

I just tried cedega today, not massively into games but the two I've tried on it, Battlefield 1942 actual game runs perfect apart from a pukbuster issue, have to play on non-punkbuster servers or you get kicked out after a few minutes and Conflict Desert Storm II runs even faster than it does under windows.

Hmmm... just realized... does steam run properly in cedega or wine? HL2 can't run without steam connection present.

Yea it does, in fact i bought HL2 and it's playing relatively fine. I upgraded my hardware a bit before hand to a geforce 6600, 1 gig RAM, and a P4 3.0E Ghz. runs pretty well in 800x600.

I've found some threads in other forums about cedega running HL2 and most people have been having fps issues though.

Err... 8by6 is running "well". Then what happens when it is set to 1024by768+? And I was going to buy the 6600GT this summer from newegg also. Will see what happens. What is your average fps on the game though?

I should say 'relatively well', the computer sometimes freezes while playing, but other than that i would say i get about 25-30 fps, which is far by sufficient for me. That's just an estimate though, i know i could check with a fps command on the console in HL2 but i'd rather not right now

Hmm.. my mistake. It depends, 30fps could be great if you have *everything* set to high, then the quality is obviously is very high and 30-40fps is what you *should* be getting. Anyways, games do crash in cedega and console should create an error file. You should send it to cedega email at:

25-30 FPS with that spec at that res isn't right, unless you have everything set to the highest setting. I have everything on medium at 800x600 and I get 32-34 FPS, with my dinky computer (2400+, 768 MB RAM, 64 MB 4MX), and cs online runs oh 25-29 (40-42 at 640x480). It runs almost perfect for me.

i did a cl_showfps 1 and... my mistake, i get about 50 fps average. you can tell i don't game much or my estimate would be better

I've only bought 3 games in the past 5 or so years, ut2004, warcraft 2 b.net, and HL2.
