Do you have a cd in the drive?
if you get this at boot all the time, you might have the wrong driver.... Whats the cdrom brand??

Will it open a regular data CD with no problems?
Will it boot from some other bootable CD? eg Windows installer, Linux live-CD, etc.

Thanks for your response, guys. The cdrom is : TSST Corp CD-ROM SH-C522C and seems to be OK when the system (FC4 2.6.11-1.1369) is reloaded. However, it seems to be changed when something else runs - could this be the modem? (I use a smartlink softmodem with slmodem driver - which works.) Data cd's work OK but when trying to read from an audio CD I get the message: Could not mount volume. File system not specified. This is where I get lost.

The kernel is telling you that it cannot read from the disc, stated much simply.
Yes it means that your CDROM is corrupted, try out burning the image again on a fresh good quality CD-R.

If the message appears again & again upon trying various media then you might need to change the CD-Drive.

From where I sit, it would appear more like a driver problem than a physical problem with disc or cd-rom.
When FC4 is installed afresh everything works fine. As soon as modem configuration is done, things start misbehaving. Problem is: I do not know how to trace where the hiccup occurs or how to rectify the problem. Any ideas?
