CDROM and Floppy fail to mount

I have set up my /etc/fstab file so it reads as such:

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat user,noauto,rw 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0

the directories mnt/floppy and mnt/cdrom exist
when i put cd's or floppy disks into the drives and mount them using:
mount /dev/cdrom
mount /dev/fd0
it appears fine
when then changing to mnt/floppy and type ls to read a list of the files it appears that there it nothing on the disks
i tryed ls -a and i get 2 folders ./ and ../
but i can not see the files
the disks are fine and the hardware is ok, the machine is dual booted with xp and xp can read the disks fine
searched the net and i may just being dim, but i cant read the disks
i am only using console as X does not work yet
(need to install drivers for graphics and they are on the cdrom)
please help if you can
If i mount the drives or not it seems to make no difference, hope i've shown enough information

Instead of referring to the devices to be mounted, refer to the directories:
mount /mnt/cdrom

Cool

the thing is, you have to mount the device to some place else on the filesystem. A big difference between *nix and Windows is that devices in *nix are represented as abstract files. However, the device's volume has to mounted somewhere else. Try this with your floppy:

mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy/ OR
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy/
