CD playback

I have been trying to get my CD player to work recently with very little success. I am running linux version 7 and am actually able to listen to CDs, however, only by using the external headphone jack and the limited controls on the drive itself; i.e., although the software player accurately reflects what is going on (if I am playing track 4 of Beethoven's Symphony #3 this is properly reflected in the GUI) I am unable to control playback through the program interface. No matter which button I press, playback stops, and in order to restart I must fall back on the external drive controls... Not sure how to fix this... Sorry, I'm not sure what other info to include, or what else might help those who might be trying to help me...

I am running redhat. I believe it is version 7.0. I went to the CD player preferences, where it says CD player device: /dev/cdrom However I think the name of the program is Gnome cd-player.

That, unfortunately, I do not know. It is not printed clearly anywhere on the drive itself, as far as I can see. And in my current state of woeful ignorance, I am also unaware of whatever command might summon it to my screen. I really appreciate your trying to help, but I suppose I shouldn't complain, given that the contraption is playing, albeit not in the most convenient way. I don't want to waste anymore of your time on it.
