cd mounting issues
i recently reinstalled RH9 from the cdrom, so thus my cd-drive does actually function correctly. however, when i put in a music cd, nothing happens. usually i would expect the cd to mount automatically.
when i try to mount it manually... # mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom/ mount: /dev/hdc is not a valid block device my fstab entry for that device is as follows (one line): /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0 i also notice that i have no /dev/cdrom defined. is this of significance? try a program such as
gcd or grip |
tried to run grip...
$ grip Error: Unable to initialize [/dev/cdrom] |
tried cdplay...
$ cdplay /dev/cdrom: No such file or directory |
Try adding to fstab:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0 |

added the line to my fstab. tried the following... # mount /mnt/cdrom/ mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist |
Try playing grip now. You don't mount music cd's

There is nothing wrong with your fstab entry for the device except for the fact there was an error.
/dev/cdrom is a link to the actual cdrom device which in your case should be /dev/hdc. Look at the hardware detection GUI to see what device if any RH thinks it should be. If you want to create a link to /dev/hdc then: ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom You can change the configuration of cdplay with the actual cdrom device. There should be some kind of configuration button. |

i put my fstab back to the /dev/hdc version i listed earlier and opened the gnome cdplayer. i got the following message: <snip> /dev/hdc does not appear to point to a valid CD device. This may be because: a) CD support is not present in your machine b) You do not have the correct permissions to access the CD drive c) /dev/hdc is not the CD drive. This means that the CD player will not be able to run. </snip> i made a link to /dev/hdc called /dev/cdrom and configured the player to point to this "new" device instead. i get the same message from the player except it reads /dev/cdrom does not appear to point to a valid CD device THANKS for any help here |
try chmod /dev/cdrom 444 this gives all users full permission for this device

usually the /dev/cdrom is symlinked to /dev/hd<some char>
on my m/c it is /dev/hdd also a ls -l /dev/hdd reveals this: 0 brw------- 1 sandeep disk 22, 64 Aug 31 2002 /dev/hdd check for the 'b' in the second column, this indicates that this is a block device. Whats your /dev/hdc like ? |

try mounting a data cd, like the installation disks. if that doesn't work check dmesg to see what it says about your drive during boot and post that up here. sounds like you were right the first time and it's not supported :(

mcd, data cd didn't mount either. i tried /bin/dmesg but got nothing interesting.

You didn't tell us it was a CDRW DVD drive. SCSI emulation is loading so see if you have a /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0 device. Then again it might not unless you have the correct modules loading.
Also tell us what modules are being loaded /sbin/lsmod Also are you using grub? |
sorry everyone for the omission of detail, but i'm wondering how my drive being a CDRW (no DVD -- not sure why that ATAPI info appears in the log) affects its definition and usability as a regular cdrom device? it's still being defined as the ide disk "hdc".....
does the fact that it's a CDRW mean that i need to define it as a scsi device in fstab ? THANKS for all the help and patience |

Do you have any /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0 devices?
If so then change your fstab. Just wondering if you have a append = "hdc=ide-scsi" line in your grub config I'm not a SCSI emulation expert since I only use SCSI devices. Just for fun if you have cdrecord app installed what is the output of: cdrecord --scanbus |
michaelk, yes i have a scd0 device, but no sr0 device in /dev/ .

Try
modprobe ide-scsi modprobe scsi_mod cdrecord --scanbus I don't know where RH sticks the grub.conf file. Try /boot. |
