cd mounting issues

i recently reinstalled RH9 from the cdrom, so thus my cd-drive does actually function correctly. however, when i put in a music cd, nothing happens. usually i would expect the cd to mount automatically.

when i try to mount it manually...

# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom/
mount: /dev/hdc is not a valid block device

my fstab entry for that device is as follows (one line):

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0

i also notice that i have no /dev/cdrom defined. is this of significance?

THANKS

darthtux 09-02-2003 12:39 PM

try a program such as
gcd
or
grip

fractal_chaos 09-02-2003 12:42 PM

tried to run grip...

$ grip
Error: Unable to initialize [/dev/cdrom]

fractal_chaos 09-02-2003 12:43 PM

tried cdplay...

$ cdplay
/dev/cdrom: No such file or directory

darthtux 09-02-2003 02:57 PM

Try adding to fstab:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0

fractal_chaos 09-02-2003 03:05 PM

thanks for the help so far ...

added the line to my fstab. tried the following...

# mount /mnt/cdrom/
mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist

darthtux 09-02-2003 04:04 PM

Try playing grip now. You don't mount music cd's

fractal_chaos 09-02-2003 04:08 PM

thanks for the continuing help

i tried grip, but got a "No Disc" error

i tried cdplay again...

$ cdplay
/dev/cdrom: No such file or directory

michaelk 09-02-2003 06:00 PM

There is nothing wrong with your fstab entry for the device except for the fact there was an error.

/dev/cdrom is a link to the actual cdrom device which in your case should be /dev/hdc. Look at the hardware detection GUI to see what device if any RH thinks it should be.

If you want to create a link to /dev/hdc then:
ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom

You can change the configuration of cdplay with the actual cdrom device. There should be some kind of configuration button.

fractal_chaos 09-02-2003 07:28 PM

thanks for your input...

i put my fstab back to the /dev/hdc version i listed earlier and opened the gnome cdplayer. i got the following message:
<snip>
/dev/hdc does not appear to point to a valid CD device. This may be because:
a) CD support is not present in your machine
b) You do not have the correct permissions to access the CD drive
c) /dev/hdc is not the CD drive.

This means that the CD player will not be able to run.
</snip>

i made a link to /dev/hdc called /dev/cdrom and configured the player to point to this "new" device instead. i get the same message from the player except it reads

/dev/cdrom does not appear to point to a valid CD device

THANKS for any help here

mcd 09-02-2003 11:02 PM

try chmod /dev/cdrom 444 this gives all users full permission for this device

sandeep 09-03-2003 02:00 AM

usually the /dev/cdrom is symlinked to /dev/hd<some char>
on my m/c it is /dev/hdd also a ls -l /dev/hdd reveals this:

0 brw------- 1 sandeep disk 22, 64 Aug 31 2002 /dev/hdd

check for the 'b' in the second column, this indicates that this is a block device. Whats your /dev/hdc like ?

BenPope 09-03-2003 08:30 AM

What does

Code:

hdparm -i /dev/hdc
tell you?

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 09:50 AM

thanks all for the help...

mcd, i did the chmod you suggested, but no change in gnome cdplayer message. i have a feeling that i have no cd support for this machine, but am not sure how to diagnose that...any hints?

sandeep, here is my cd-related device and link

br--r--r-- 1 root disk 22, 0 Jan 30 2003 /dev/hdc

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Sep 2 13:43 /dev/cdrom -> hdc

benpope, i get a "command not found" message using hdparm. what does that script do? perhaps it's not included with my distro?

THANKS

darthtux 09-03-2003 11:07 AM

Try
/sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hdc

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 11:59 AM

benpope, darthtux,
i tried hdparm again...

# /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc: No such device or address

mcd 09-03-2003 01:53 PM

try mounting a data cd, like the installation disks. if that doesn't work check dmesg to see what it says about your drive during boot and post that up here. sounds like you were right the first time and it's not supported :(

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 03:21 PM

mcd, data cd didn't mount either. i tried /bin/dmesg but got nothing interesting.

here is a snipping from my /var/log/messages.3 file....sorry if it's not the right log file

THANKS for everyone's input so far

michaelk 09-03-2003 05:10 PM

You didn't tell us it was a CDRW DVD drive. SCSI emulation is loading so see if you have a /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0 device. Then again it might not unless you have the correct modules loading.

Also tell us what modules are being loaded
/sbin/lsmod

Also are you using grub?

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 05:19 PM

sorry everyone for the omission of detail, but i'm wondering how my drive being a CDRW (no DVD -- not sure why that ATAPI info appears in the log) affects its definition and usability as a regular cdrom device? it's still being defined as the ide disk "hdc".....

does the fact that it's a CDRW mean that i need to define it as a scsi device in fstab ?

THANKS for all the help and patience

Do you have any /dev/scd0 or /dev/sr0 devices?

If so then change your fstab.

Just wondering if you have a append = "hdc=ide-scsi" line in your grub config

I'm not a SCSI emulation expert since I only use SCSI devices.

Just for fun if you have cdrecord app installed what is the output of:

cdrecord --scanbus

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 05:40 PM

michaelk, yes i have a scd0 device, but no sr0 device in /dev/ .

my fstab cd line reads thus now...

/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,user,kudzu,ro 0 0

but when i try to mount /mnt/cdrom with a linux data disk in there i get the same ol'
mount: /dev/scd0 is not a valid block device

i'm not sure how to check my grub config to see if i have a append = "hdc=ide-scsi" line there.....

here is the cdrecord output you asked for....
# cdrecord --scanbus
Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 J?rg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

THANKS

michaelk 09-03-2003 05:57 PM

Try
modprobe ide-scsi
modprobe scsi_mod

cdrecord --scanbus

I don't know where RH sticks the grub.conf file. Try /boot.

fractal_chaos 09-03-2003 06:14 PM

michaelk...thanks for the recent help. here is the output from the list of scripts you suggested running...

i can now mount a data disk, and burn cd's, and i can even play music cd's !!

THANKS HEAPS everyone for all your help and michaelk espec for his recent assistance.

but i'm curious as to what the problem was...apparently ide CDRW act as scsi devices? what is it about CDRW's that they require this definition?
