CD/DvD and Sound problems

Hi,

I have two problems, one with the sound and one with the DVD. I have a Ubunto and I am a newbie.

1) Sometimes I need to reboot the pc to have sound. How do I fix that ?

2) I got this "legal" dvd from a friend, when I tried to watch it I couldn't, so I tried to mount it manually and I got the "mount: media not found" error message. I rebooted, then I was able to watch it. How do I fix that ?

Thank you...

1. Depends on what causes the sound to stop working, you may be able to just stop and restart the sound system instead of having to reboot.

2. Why is "legal" in quotes? I assume you mean a ripped DVD, or even a real commercially produced DVD, in which case you don't actually mount them, you simply play them. Why you have to reboot for anything to work begins to make me wonder what you are doing with your system. If you boot up, try to play the DVD and you can't, then immediately reboot and do the same thing and it does... sounds like a hardware issue since the software setup would be identical in both cases. Something like a bad stick of RAM, a motherboard with a failing capacitor or even a DVD drive that wants to die (maybe a power supply that isn't supplying enough power every time).

Cool

Do you have the right drivers for your sound and video card?

Right drivers ? I didn't install any driver. Ubuntu does it on its own, or doesn't it ?

MasterC 05-29-2007 10:27 PM

Drivers is windows speak for module. Ubuntu does it on it's own, and sometimes there are multiple versions. I assume the responder was suggesting that maybe upon reboot the correct module is getting loaded rather than a generic or incorrect one; this may be the case but is rather unlikely and if this is indeed happening it's a bug that you may want to file with Ubuntu.

Cool

So how can I make sure the right module gets loaded ?

You first have to figure out if that is indeed the problem. Like I said, it sounds more to me like hardware...

Cool

No, no its not a hardware issue because I already watched the movie on the same pc and the same OS. It sounds like once it loads the right module and another time it doesn't.

The same goes for the sound, before an hour I had sound, I shut down the pc. I turned it on and now I don't have sound.

How do I make it load the right modules ?
