CD audio files won't mount from cdrom1 in RH8

I'm trying to set up xmms as my CD player in RH8 Gnome. It works great for MP3 files, even when they're on a cd (/mnt/cdrom1). The CD drive mounts fine for data and RPM files as well. Whenever I put a store bought music CD in the drive, though, xmms won't recognize any files in it and the mount command gives the error "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom1, or too many mounted file systems." The strange thing is that as soon as I put the CD in the drive, Gnome CD player starts playing, but with no sound.
I've logged on as root and tried changing the /etc/fstab file to "auto" as a filetype for the cdrom1, but then I got an error saying "must supply filetype." I changed the fstab file back to the way it was and decided it was time to ask for help before I really chinger something on my system.
There are similar posts on the site to this one, but none exactly like it. Any help would be appreciated.

do an LQ search. I know it's been discussed before.
