CD Audio
 

Have just gotten Suse Linux up in the last couple of weeks. Pretty happy with it overall, but seem to have a problem with the audio.

First, when I put an audio CD in the drive, it'll play but no sound comes out of my speakers. They work for other tones, so not sure what's up with that. But then I ripped one of my CDs to OGG format, and I can play those files fine.

Second issue. When playing the OGG files using XMMS, or almost any other player, the volume button has no impact whatsoever. Used all of the audio mixers, and no effect on the volume coming out of my speakers. The only app that will allow me to turn it down some is Juk.

So....how can I fix these issues??

Have you got your CD-ROM hooked up
to the soundcard? (internal little cable)?

Which mixers did you actually use, is your
system using ALSA?

Yeah, I built the system myself some time ago. Everything is hooked up, and works fine under windows. I'll triple check when I get home, but I don't think this is the issue.

Not sure which mixers I looked at. I know Alsa was one. I installed every multimedia doodad on the disc, so there were quite a few. The KDE one (KMix?) seemed to have the best interface though. I think I even looked at the settings in YAST, but nothing looked weird there.

The deal with XMMS and the other apps was that even their volume controls had no effect on the sound.

As far as hardware goes, I have a Sounblaster Live Platinum. And the drive is actually a Panasonic DVD drive.

Well, chances are that the mixers pick up the
wrong channel as default (same with the apps).

Try using rexima from a command-line.

I have a similar problem as well...
 

With my PC, I have installed Red Hat 9, retail box version...

My system is setup as a dual-boot. It has Win98 SE, and RH9. Both of my CD drives are connected to my sound card, and both play CDs just fine in Win98SE.

However, when I insert a CD into either drive, CD Player (in RH9) automatically pops up, and it appears to be playing just fine, but there is no sound coming out of my speakers as well. I've checked all my volume settings, and they all seem just fine, but still no sound is coming out.

One way I've gotten around this is using XMMS. In the playlist, I direct it to my CD Drive as a "Load Directory" and it pops all the songs onto the playlist (unnamed of course). Then it allows me to play every song on the CD, EXCEPT THE LAST SONG. For some reason it doesn't play the last song on my CDs. The fact that XMMS can play CDs just fine leads me to believe there's a problem with my CD Player program or something.

I know it's not a sound card issue, as the card works well for game sounds, and other things too...

What do you guys think of this?

Does your xmms support/use the DIGITAL AUDIO
plugin? :) ... if so, you might not have the cable
mentioned above. If not, it's a mixer problem.

I just checked, I have the cable, and I believe it to be an OSS Mixer problem. Now I just have to figure out how to change/fix the settings.

Ok, so checked my cable, and it is hooked up nice and tight. However, I did some snooping around in XMMS and found the CD Audio driver bit. Switched it to Digital Audio, instead of Analog, and now XMMS will play CDs :) However, no other programs will play them (KCD for instance).

Not sure if that means that my cable is bad, or if there's a problem with Linux recognizing that port on my card. As much problems as I've seen on the message boards about CD Audio, I would assume it's a Linux issue, but who knows.

On the other issue, I looked at the OSS driver in XMMS. There was some switch there that switched the XMMS Volume from PCM to Master. Both really did have an effect on the Volume to varying degrees, but what's the difference? I was able to narrow the real issue down to the fact that Master isn't adjusting the level of my rear speakers, so that's why it didn't seem to have any effect. So, how do I get Master to include the rear channel?
