Cant mount, go online, and cant use preinstalled XP on EEE 1000h.

Bought a new laptop and decided to go open source. A EEE 1000H, with a preinstalled XP. I installed buntu 8.4 using online instructions. At the moment I cannot mount my external HD, or my Cruiser Micro Sandisk 2gig usb stick. I also cannot use a rj45 to go online when I plugged it into my router. And forget about Wifi. Since I cant access either external drives I cannot install useful drivers I found, and I cant do it online either. Even worse whenever I try and choose XP it doesnt want to load up so now Im stuck with Ubuntu, and dont know what to do next. My open source experiment is a big failure unless someone can help.

Cheers

ps Total linux newbie, so please be very gentle and treat me like a retard.

Why would you get the XP version and then put Ubuntu on it? The Linux version of the Eee comes with a specially designed Linux OS that is built to work with all of the hardware in the Eee, while standard Linux distributions are not necessarily going to be compatible.

There are other Linux distributions now built for the Eee, you should probably look into one of those instead of stock Ubuntu.

For one thing, when I was buying the item from amazon.co.uk I bought the Linux version with Xandros on it. Instead got sent the XP version.

But the thing is since I cant access the preinstalled XP, or mount external driver cant do anything with it until I get one of my many problems fixed.

Cheers.
