Cant login to rh9

My system has been working up to yesterday when I had ximian error out when closing it. It was still thinking (had a window up that said 'exiting ximian') but it was covered by another window and I didn't see it. I started ximian but it did not start. I noticed the other window indicating it was still closing down. I clicked the 'x' in the corner of that window to close it down but after that, ximian would still not start. I closed all windows and rebooted the server.

Now, it boots up to a gnome login window but once I type username and password, it halts at the splash screen that typically starts rolling icons across the bottom before going to the gnome desktop.

I have samba running and can see the samba drives from other pc's but cant log in. I also have not succeeded in logging in using ssh from another machine because rh9 has something defaulted to not let me and I haven't figured that out yet.

What can I do to get logged on to the machine itself?

Thanks for help.

Alright, I read another post that mentioned ctrl-alt-f1 to get to another login and tried it. I can log in there but am not sure what to look for in regards to what could be stopping gnome from starting up.

Is there a bootup log file that could give some hints?

Thanks.

try posting your XFree logs. You can find them at /var/log/XFree86.0.log

I used ctrl-alt-backspace, which re-starts the X-server (or something) and then it worked. I believe my problem was related to starting evolution while it was still shutting down. Your problem may be unrelated but give it a try.
You can also use ctrl-alt-f1 or f2 etc... and get to a text login screen.
