Hi,

Redhat has a gui interface for user administration, try that (I'm sure other will be able to tell you other ways to get you username and password back)

For the modem take a look at www.linmodems.org with any luck you can get it to work in Linux.

You can't remember your root password either?
If you do log in as root and then try finding the user info (I think it's somewhere in /etc
If that fails as well boot with the RH rescue disc and try adding a new user with that.

If you know the root password, use it to login. Then, you can type "passwd username", replacing the username with the correct name. It will change the password for that account. Then, type "exit" to logout root, and login with the username and new password.

If you don't know the root password, you can boot into single-user mode...

If it boots up with LILO, when it says "boot:", type in "linux single".

If it boots up with GRUB, select the linux entry, and type "e" to edit. Select the line that starts with "kernel", and type "e", again. At the end of the line, add a space and "single". Hit [enter] to get back to the main GRUB menu, and type "b" to boot.

Once you're in single-mode, you can do the whole password thing as above. You'll then have to reboot to get out of single-mode. If you did the GRUB thing, edit the entry again and remove the "single", otherwise it will keep going to single-mode.

The SM stands for soft modem.Good luck with it as I believe that it is going to be more trouble than it's worth.I did find some info about it at Modem-Help if you want to read about it.
How'd you fix your root password problem?

Hi lynch,
Thanks for providing that usefull link, let see i can solve it or not. For my root password , first enter Linux in Linux Single mode and then i just reset the password by using passwd command, so what i do, at LILO boot:
boot: Linux Single
once i was in single mode, i issue that command
#bushasswd root
then it ask me about new root password,
so that resetted my root password
after that just give the following command
#bush:init 5

i think that u will also try
Cheers
