cant install applications on ubuntu 8.04 please help me
 
hello, am new in the usage of ubuntu and one thing that get me very upset is that when i download ubuntu softwares they come in .tar and others and i cant get to install them.please can you give me a step by step way of installing these applications. thanks am very greatful

The .tar.* files are the source code, which you'll need to compile yourself. The generally accepted way to install on Linux distros which have one is to use the package manager, which in Ubuntu is Synaptic.

This is not true in all cases, since tarballs can contain any type of files, not just source code. The Firefox binary package available from mozilla.com comes in a tarball, for example.
