cant install anything
 

i have a bad problem i try to install stuff off of the cd and it it errors out i tryed to put wine4line on and it had an error so i tryed to get a zip and unzip programe and it wont install ether the name of it is linerar (for linuxs).

Could you be a little more specific about what errors, and such, you're getting? They're the important bit when diagnosing problems.

ok sorry the error was (nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying) the software im trying to installe.

Aha! Sound to me like you haven't got your filetype associations sorted properly. It's actually the same situation in Windows, except that Windows opens the 'open with' dialog box.

You'll need to configure what program to use to install stuff with. I am presuming that you're running an RPM based distro? You could try running gnorpm. I've not used Nautilus much, or Gnorpm for that matter, but I think you should probably be alright once you have this sorted.

What distro are you using? RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE, Slackware, Debian? RPM files can be considered to be like the ol' setup.exe files for Windows... except they're not. It is what most programs on the installation CDs of most distros will be in. They're sort of 'run me to install this' kind of programs. It is short for Redhat Package Management. Like when you click on an image file in Windows, an image editing program opens up (in my case PSP), so in Nautilus, you click on a file and a corresponding program opens up. Nautilus, being a Gnome program, should open up something like gnorpm when you click/double-click on the icon.

As for sorting it, I'm affraid you're gonna have to either wait a while until someone else picks this up, or hunt around yourself. I don't use Nautilus much, so I've never had to attempt this. I actually have a broken Nautlius, so I can't even get into it to try myself... sorry. I would have thought that it's be in the preferences bit, myself.

Aha! In which case you'll want to be using rpmdrake then.

A problem that seems to befall most Linux systems that use RPM to install stuff (called packages) is that of dependancies. Often you will try to install something and it'll pop up a message saying that you need to download something else for it to work. Then you download this other piece of software, only to find out that it too needs something else. You can spend ages downloading files just to get your initial app to work! Mandrake have employed something called urpmi that attempts to take most of this pain out of it. If you use rpmdrake to install and uninstall stuff, and also use it to define new sources of files to install, then it'll automagically sift through the files and work out the dependancies for you. Obviously there will be the odd occasion where you still need to download something else, but it does reduce this right down, if you let it.

This is going to sound awfully rude, but could you explain in intricate detail exactly how you are attempting to install stuff? Normally, with a standard Mandrake setup you should be able to install stuff very easily... it is, afterall, a newbie orientated distro!

maybe this is a stupid idea but:
usually u cant install sth as user. u´ve to be root.
if this doesnt help post exact error messages so we may help u.
