Cant get sound in winex even after disabling arts

I just got WinX 3.1 and installed Half-Life so I may play some Counterstrike. I cannot get sound to play even after I turn of the KDE ARTS sound server. I even tried running the artswrapper in root to see if that would fix it. What am I doing wrong? I'm running RH9

I had this same problem, here is how I fixed it. I went into Mandrake 9.1 control center, and I removed all the sound related installed programs, even artsd. I know it sucks to not have arts anymore, but it gave me sound in counter strike, and thats good enough for me
