Did you install wine? I seriously doubt it is installed with a default installation.

In a terminal?

You mean to try to install your program? It's sudo apt-get update. That will get system updates, you will still need to install wine. Look for it in Synaptic Package Manager. I think you can find it by clicking on the System tab at the top of your Desktop. I'm not using Ubuntu.

If you have installed wine, there should be a hidden folder in you /home/user directory. You should be able to check to see if it is there (if you haven't already) by clicking on the places tab to open the file manager, then go to your /home/justjeff directory (use your correct user name here), click on the View tab on the top and you should see an option to show hidden files. Take a look in the wine folder. I think there are a few steps you need to take to configure wine before using it.

In your initial post you said you tried using wine SmartDownload.exe. How? Exactly what did you do? Click on its icon? Enter that name in a terminal?

Actually, I think you will need to give more information on the steps you took to install wine, verify that it is actually there and then give a little information on what windows program you are trying to use. SmartDownload.exe sounds like a strange name for casino software. Have you read the documentation at winehq?

I think this should verify that I have wine loaded and configured correctly, I used the notepad feature they have for checking, can open a new terminal window and type wine notepad.exe and it opens notepad, also can get to it by going through applications wine programs accessories notepad.

when I tried to run the wine SmartDownload.exe it was in a terminal window.

The casino is called 55chip and they sent me a flyer through snail mail for $55.00 and wanted to use it. Went to their site, downloaded their software which comes back as SmartDownload.exe

I downloaded wine from their web site and then used
sudo apt-get install package_wine to install then check for updates with update manger then used synaptic to install all the packages.

I spent a good couple hours going through winehq, not just wanting a easy answer, sure do appreicate the help and have been learning quite a bit about just how to use and work with linux.

Is this the site?

http://www.55chip.com

Click Download our Free Software. Downloads the file you referred to: SmartDownload.exe, 852.4kb file?

So where is your SmartDownload.exe file? If you open a terminal and type: wine SmartDownload.exe, I doubt it would work. You need to either change to the directory where the file is or put the full path to the directory in the terminal. I believe you would need it in the .wine directory somewhere. My experience with wine ended with getting notepad to work. I'm posting a link from Ubuntu forums from several years ago with someone who had a similar problem and includes examples of what I am referring to.

Good Luck.

Is "SmartDownload" a download manager?

If so, then there are plenty of Linux alternatives.

I remember a SmartDownload from the Netscape era and the 33 or 56kbit modem lines! I think it was a way to download big files (software installers etc) with broken connection resume capability.
Is it perhaps a downloader for the main game software?

I would guess it is. I downloaded it and it is an 852kb file. I don't have wine installed so can't see what it actually does.

So I see, it seems that the vendor is using SmartDownload.exe for exclusive method of downloading their software and install locally.

Follow yancek's advice: wine SmartDownload.exe should be issued inside the directory containing the *.exe file otherwise you will need to define the location of the file:

wine /where/theExeFile.exe

Good luck.

This article says that many casino have flash based games in the browser, so the operating system should not be a problem.
