Hello All,

CAn anybody help me with this problem. I am downloading packages using Firefox which downloads the file to the My Downloads area. I check to see if the file is physically there , which it is, and yet I still get the message below when I go to install the package. This is happening on all my Ubuntu 8.10 machines of late. Would appreciate some help on this one.

You cannot install a *.tar.gz archive using apt-get install. Maybe you have downloaded the source code of vnc not the binary package, whose extension is .deb. You can try to install the binary package using synaptic and looking for vnc4server or something similar.

Otherwise, extract the tar.gz archive and read instructions in the README file inside it. You will have to run the vncinstall script.

Welcome to LQ.

Usually no need to download anything with Firefox,
28000 ubuntu packages are available with
'sudo apt-get install' or 'synaptic'.

The command
sudo apt-get install vlc

will provide the vlc multimedia player and streamer.

The OP was trying to install vnc, not vlc.
