"Cant find Knoppix file system" when booting knoppix4.0 on Dell Inspiron 15R
 

Hi all,
I have http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...system-520029/ similar problem when booting knoppix.

i tried many combinations of "no-" commands like

• boot: knoppix acpi=off pnpbios=off noapic noapm nodma nopcmcia nofirewire noagp nomce nodhcp

etc.
boot: expert

when i tried running it on my desktop [intel atom processor, 1gb ram, cd-rom, ps2 mouse] the livecd works fine...
but on my laptop [intel i5 2nd gen processer, 4gb ram, dvd-rom, touchpad(even ps2 mouse), NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M graphic card] I get the error.

please help me on this issue.

Knoppix 4 is ancient (released in 2005). While it can cope with the simple (and may be somewhat older) hardware in the Atom machine it simply lacks the drivers for your new laptop. Try it with a recent version.

Funny, Knoppix 4 has no sata. You'd have to add in a boot option of yes sata.

The 6.7.1 ought to work except the knoppix terminal server tftp is borked but otherwise a good choice for that. It should work.

If not try maybe Debian live, or Gentoo live or well, really any of the newer live distro's.

Knoppix is a good live distro but I don't recommend it as an installed one.

Do you mean you are booting from an USB?
Or from a CDROM?
Or you have already the knoppix files on your HDD and you are starting from syslinux?
If I remember I had such things because I did not put the KNOPPIX file in /KNOPPIX/ but in /knoppix/.

Is it possible Knoppix only has 32-bit versions and this processor is 64-bit?
Debian live only has two versions, 32-bit and amd64

The i5 CPUs are 64 bit, but they run 32 bit OSes fine. It doesn't matter that Knoppix 4 is 32 bit, but it does matter that it is 6 years old and simply has no drivers for that machine.

After I logged off yesterday, I remembered the 32-bit Debian Live I built last winter. As I tested it during creation on some demo laptops at Costco, I was a little confused when it got booted on an i5 machine. I have not found the time to get up to speed on many of the latest CPUs. As such, I agree with you on that one.

The reason I went with Debian Live was because the latest Knoppix at the time did not have good hardware support, not sure if it was version 6 or 7, probably 6.2. Ubuntu was not much different, but through package management one could get better hardware support with Ubuntu, but to keep the changes, one needs persistence. By building my own Debian Live I implemented superior hardware support complete with proprietary drivers, all the software suits I need and more, and fully customized with my color scheme, my desktop background, etc. No persistence required.

In my opinion, Knoppix 5 was better than 6.2, have not tried 7.1 as I don't need it.

i was booting from CDROM... which was giving this error..

then i downloaded DSL and tried to boot from usb after changing boot configuration bt it dint boot from usb bt directly booted from hard disk.

this is the folder structure:
boot KNOPPIX lost+found index.html

Try another livedistro and see what happens.
look for a distro at www.distrowatch.com
Perhaps a CDROM issue of your laptop?

Sort of a hijacked thread going on?
